![]() As the driving force behind the distribution of Ox圜ontin, Sackler’s moral preaching about “healing the world’s pain” contrasts with his emotionless demeanour and unblinking gaze. ![]() ![]() Well, Richard Sackler might be an exception. While several seen-it-before subplots don’t do much to push the plot forward, they do plenty to make these characters relatable and human. It’s a lot to cover with the narrative bouncing back and forth between various years, which takes an episode to get used to. The final part follows law enforcement recognising the epidemic hiding in plain sight and attempting to expose Purdue as the root cause. The second story focuses on a doctor and his patients within a tight-knit community, just a few of the thousands of people who suffered from Purdue’s actions. The first shows the evil genius of it all, Purdue Pharma, weaving through loopholes and using aggressive marketing to make billions selling a dangerously addictive and deadly drug to the unsuspecting public. Their performances reminded viewers of the human side of the story, creating relatable and even sympathy-inducing characters that could carry through a very dark and difficult series.Throughout its eight episodes, Dopesick unravels the catastrophe caused by the drug Ox圜ontin through three different stories. The Hulu series boasted a whole slate of top-notch performances from Michael Keaton, Kaitlyn Dever, Peter Sarsgaard, and Will Poulter. Dopesick pulls this off quite well, partly due to its stellar cast. Both deal with sensitive, heavy, and dark subject matter, meaning that the storytelling needed to be handled with additional care and thought. Given the similarities, the main area where Painkiller and Dopesick differ is in execution. The core of both stories is heartbreak and tragedy as they demonstrate the cost of greed and corruption and track the devastation of the opioid crisis. ![]() Both dramas feature some fictional characters and members of the real-life Sackler family. They both largely tell the same story, honing in on the epicenter of the opioid crisis in the United States and an emphasis on Purdue Pharma, which developed and marketed the drug Ox圜ontin. There are likely questions about what makes Dopesick seemingly superior to Painkiller, based on critic reviews. Based on 70 critic reviews, Dopesick received a Rotten Tomatoes score of 89 percent. Additionally, it's a much lower score than Dopesick. Rotten Tomatoes is not the definitive decider on a show's quality, but it does suggest that the reception of Painkiller is mixed-to-negative. While more Rotten Tomatoes reviews may still be coming in, Painkiller currently boasts a rating of 44 percent on the site. Meanwhile, Painkiller arrived on Netflix on August 10, and critics and audiences are starting to get a feel for the six-episode series. Dopesick was released two years before Painkiller and received a largely positive reception, even scooping up 14 nominations at the 2022 Emmys. It's not surprising that comparisons will be drawn between the two dramas, considering they're both limited shows from streamers that tackle the origins of the opioid crisis. ![]() The Rotten Tomatoes score is in for Painkiller, Netflix's drama about the opioid crisis, and audiences may be curious how it compares to Hulu's Dopesick. ![]()
